1. Why do we need to upgrade to Windows 11? Why can’t we stay on Windows 10?
Windows 10 is going end of life on October 14th. This means there will be no more security updates, technical support or feature updates for Windows 10. We need to upgrade to Windows 11 to make sure all our systems stay safe and up to date.
2. When I will be upgraded?
We have set up three different groups to upgrade in phases. We will be sending out communication and the upgrade schedule to the agency. Please reference the update schedule to find when you are scheduled to be upgraded.
3. Do I need to do anything for the upgrade?
Yes
Backup Files - Before your scheduled upgrade day, please make sure to move any files on your computer to your OneDrive. Just in case.
Plug In Laptop - On upgrade day, please keep your computer plugged into your charger or dock overnight. The update itself will automatically be installed overnight and will be ready for you in the morning.
4. What if I run into an issue with my computer right away after the upgrade?
If your computer doesn’t turn on, or you’re having issues with Windows 11 right after the upgrade, please call IT (952) 999-9959 or send a ticket from your phone to the Service Desk, servicedesk@mvta.com, and we will assist you.
5. Will I lose all my files, folders, icons, applications and bookmarks during the upgrade?
No, this upgrade is NOT a computer reset. This will be an in-place upgrade which means all files, folders, applications, bookmarks and icons will remain where they are.
If after the upgrade you’re noticing something missing, please submit a ticket to the Service Desk and we will assist you.
6. Do I need to be connected to the VPN for this process?
Yes, only if the computer is not in the office, connected to the MVTA Network (Wired or Wireless)

VPN Connect is not required If you are within MVTA Premises.

VPN Connect is required If you are going though this upgrade from Home or out of state.
7. Will my computer have to restart?
Yes – For the upgrade to take effect, the computer will need to be restarted to finish the upgrade.
Windows updates often require a reboot because many changes, especially those involving core system files or drivers, cannot be applied while the system is running. These files are often locked by the operating system when in use, and the update process needs to replace them with newer versions. A reboot clears these locks, allowing the update to complete and the new files to be loaded.
